NORFOLK -- The breast milk bank at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughter will begin accepting donor applications Tuesday.

Officials say it will provide nutritionally optimal breast milk to critically ill newborns in the CHKD Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Since 2012, CHKD has worked with three donor milk banks to provide breast milk to babies who weighed less than 3 pounds 5 ounces at birth and were born less than 30 weeks gestational age. CHKD has treated more than 100 patients with donor human milk and an average of 10 patients there receive donor milk every day.

Establishing a milk bank at CHKD and recruiting local donors will help the hospital meet the need.

Mothers interested in donating milk can contact the Milk Bank by email at KDmilkbank@chkd.org or by calling Ashlynn Baker at 757-668-MILK (6455) to arrange a donor screening.
