NEWPORT NEWS -- 'Intensive labor demands' required firefighters to call extra engines to the scene of a house fire Sunday night.

The call about the fire in the 400 block of Ashton Green Boulevard came at about 6:45 p.m.

Battalion Chief Stephen Pincus said crews arrived about five minutes after dispatchers received the call. He added that the fire presented a challenge for crews because there was a large amount of items in the home. Many of those items were burning and had to be removed.

Firefighters had things under control around 7:15 p.m. They stayed at the home for several hours to put out smoldering debris.

No one was hurt.

The home was condemned. The American Red Cross is helping two people who lived there.

Investigators are working to determine the cause.
