ACCOMACK CO. -- The suspected intoxicated driver police say is responsible for causing a triple-fatal crash is in the trauma unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after he was assaulted in jail.

Bonifilio Velazquez, 36, of Accomac, was injured in an incident at the Accomack County Jail Monday, September 1, at 7:35 p.m., according to Accomack County Sheriff Todd Godwin.

Godwin declined to release additional details about the assault because the incident is still under investigation.

'There definitely will be charges...We don't tolerate fighting in our jail,' he said.

Velazquez was initially taken to Eastern Shore Regional Jail after he was arrested and charged with drunk driving and three counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with a head-on wreck on Route 13 in Keller Saturday around 8:15 p.m.

He later was transported to Accomack County Jail, arriving there about 11:35 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Velazquez on Saturday night was driving north on the highway in a 1999 Chevrolet Venture when he crossed the median and struck a 2012 Nissan Altima head-on.
