PORTSMOUTH A Portsmouth man died early Wednesday morning after being shot several times.
Police say it happened about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday night near 50 Harris Road.

The young man's mother called 911. When emergency crews arrived, they found him near the back door of the home.

The victim, 25-year old Detwan Sims, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General where he immediately had surgery, but he died shortly after 4:00 Wednesday morning.

Investigators believe Sims was walking to his home when at least two other men tried to rob him and that's when he was shot. Sims crawled to the back door to alert his family.

Sims' family tells 13News his cell phone was stolen and that he was walking home from his cousin's who lives just a few blocks away.

Police are still trying to put together a detailed suspect description.

This is the 14th homicide of the year in Portsmouth.
