VIRGINIA BEACH-- A Virginia Beach man was sentenced to 32 years in prison for the 2012 death of his 14-month-old daughter.

Marcus Dewayne Brantley pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder and child endangerment.

Circuit Court Judge Glenn R. Croshaw sentenced Brantley Monday to serve 45 years and suspended 13, leaving 32 years to serve.

Brantley's daughter, Melanie, died on August 17, 2012. Brantley said the toddler had fallen and hit her head, but doctors concluded her injuries were consistent with abusive head trauma, shaking, and battered child syndrome.

According to prosecutors, Melanie suffered swelling and bleeding of the brain, bruising on her cheek and eyelid, multiple large skull fractures on three different sides of her head, healing rib fractures, and brain and retinal hemorrhages.

Melanie's mother was deployed with the Navy when the incident occurred.
