NEWPORT NEWS -- One man was injured during a shooting in Newport News Thursday afternoon.

According to police, a 21-year-old man was shot in the arm near the A&S convenience store on Marshall Ave. around 2:30 p.m.

Police found the victim lying on the sidewalk and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to police, two groups of individuals confronted each other near the A&S market and at some point shots were fired and both groups fled.

Police say although the shooting happened near Heritage High School, they do not believe it is school related.

School officials said three school went on lockdown for about 15minutes - Heritage High School, An Achievable Dream Middle and High School, and Newsome Park Elementary School.

The investigation is ongoing.
