NEWPORT NEWS -- Officers shot and killed a pit bull after it allegedly 'charged' at them in Newport News Friday morning.

Officers responded to a call at the 1100 block of 73rd Street around 7 a.m. that loose dogs were attacking a cat. When officers arrived, the owner of the cat told police that two pit bulls jumped his fence and attacked his pet.

Authorities say when officers approached, one dog charged and the officers shot and killed the animal.

The second dog ran away and was later located on 73rd Street.

The cat was taken to the animal hospital but did not survive.

Animal Control officers took the dog but an owner has not been located. Police say neither dog was wearing a collar.

Anyone with knowledge of the owner of the two pit bulls are asked to call the police non-emergency number at 757-247-2500.
