ELIZABETH CITY--Police investigating a complaint of unearthed skeletal remains found in the Old Oak Grove Cemetery.

Police believe the grave was dug up in an attempt to create a new burial site.

Human skeletal remains were found amid newly dug up earth on Thursday, March 14th, at the rear of the Old Oak Grove Cemetery on Peartree Road. The skeletal remains were apparently from an unearthed gravesite somewhere on the property.

A lawn care maintenance employee found the bones. Police officers collected them and they are being housed nearby until the original gravesite can be identified and proper burial can be done.

The police, the Elizabeth City Parks and Recreation Department and the Office of the City Clerk are examining recent records to see who might have unearthed this grave and if proper registration protocol was followed.
