NORFOLK (AP) -- A North Carolina man was sentenced to two years in prison for attempting to smuggle shotguns hidden inside cut-up luxury vehicles to Egypt.
U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride says 26-year-old Muhaned Abbas Mohamed of Greensboro was sentenced in federal court in Norfolk Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in February.
Court documents show that on Sept. 21, 2011, U.S. Customs received a report from Greensboro police that a shipping container sent by Nihal Auto Sales was headed to Egypt with contraband. Inspectors located that container at the port in Norfolk. Inside, they found six pistol grip shotguns wrapped in plastic and hidden inside the rear seat of a Lexus SUV.
The SUV and three others had been cut down the middle. Three motorcycles also were included in the shipment, marked as used parts.
