NEWPORT NEWS -- Police are searching for a man who reportedly caused quite a commotion at a Newport News school Friday.

According to police spokesman Lou Thurston, a man was screaming and running through the hallways at Sanford Elementary School around 11 a.m.

School officials say the man entered the building through the front door, which is usually unlocked and monitored by office staff.

Thurston says there were no injuries and no reports of the man attempting to assault or approach anyone in a menacing manner.

School administrators immediately placed the school on lockdown while the school was checked and students, faculty and staff were accounted for.

School officials say the man left the building shortly after the incident.

The lockdown was lifted around 11:45 a.m.

Police describe the suspect as a black man in his forties and say he was wearing an orange shirt. Police are searching an area around the school for the suspect.
