VIRGINIA BEACH -- Less than 24 hours after Virginia's ban on gay marriage was ruled unconstitutional by a Norfolk federal judge, two Virginia Beach same-sex couples were told they could not get a marriage license - yet.
Garland Tillery and Jim Early applied for their license at the Virginia Beach clerk of courts office Friday afternoon. So did Carol Peterson and her partner Loen.
The chief deputy clerk wrote on the license application, 'unable to accept at this time.' That's because Judge Arenda L. Wright-Allen stayed the application of her ruling until opponents of same-sex marriage could file their appeal with the 4th District Court of Appeals in Richmond.
Peterson is the pastor of UnitedChurch of Christ in Virginia Beach.
Today's effort was one of several that took place at courthouses across Virginia.
