RICHMOND (AP) -- Richmond police say they have detained a teenage boy suspected of assaulting a young girl and killing her little brother.
According to media outlets, police said the boy was being medically evaluated Friday and they planned to charge him in the attacks. Police spokesmen did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press.
Neighbors told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the boy died trying to protect his sister from the attacker. Neighbor Sudan Aunu said the girl is alive today because of her brother.
Pastor Theodore Hughey of the Abundant Life Church said the boy was 9 and the girl is 12. He said the siblings were inseparable and always in and out of the church.
WRIC-TV reports says family members reported someone walking on the tracks sexually assaulted the girl and cut her face around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Her younger brother tried to intervene and that's when their family members say the man threw a rock at his head. He died instantly.
