NEWPORT NEWS -- 'I can't look at men the same way. I used to be the girl that always, you know, would make people laugh, and I would be able to talk to guys with confidence, and, now, I can't even look at a man anymore, you know, I look at them, and, it's, I'm scared to death,' said 31-year-old Sophie.
In April, someone allegedly raped her after offering her a ride to the Amtrak Station off Warwick Boulevard.
Sophie, as she asked 13News Now to call her, met the person on Holland Road in Virginia Beach around 11:00 p.m. April 16. She was hoping to catch a bus to the station in Newport News. The driver of a dark green, two-door car pulled up and started talking to her.
Sophie, who had some business in town, said the driver explained the buses didn't pick up at that hour from that location. He said he could give her a ride. She told him she would cover his gas because he was offering to help her.
The drive to Newport News began. Sophie told 13News Now they made small talk along the way. When they got to a parking lot near the train station -- a lot police said was in the area of Huntington Beach Park -- the atmosphere in the car changed quickly.
'He proceeded to, you know, try to touch me, and I told him to stop, and he was getting more aggressive, and I started, you know, trying to hit him off me,' recalled Sophie. 'We struggled for a good while. He, you know, hitting my head against the dash, hitting my head against the steering wheel, and, you know, I was trying to get out of the car. He kept pulling me back in, you know.'
Sophie continued, 'Eventually, he pulled out a knife, and at that point, I felt i just wanted to get home to my family, and I kind of just gave in at that point. He proceeded to rape me, and after he was done, he robbed me of what cash I did have and drove off and left me there.'
The 31-year-old tried to flag someone down, with no success. Finally, someone walking in the area stopped around 2:30 a.m. (April 17) and called police for her.
The alleged attacker is in his late 20s or early 30s and has the number 13 in Roman numerals tattooed on his neck. Sophie said he had an athletic build with angular features and appeared almost gaunt in his face. The dark green, two-door car he drove had either North Carolina or South Carolina license plates.
'I don't want this to affect how I see everyone in the world, though, I don't want to be this cynical person that doesn't trust anyone, you know. I want to overcome that,' Sophie said from her home in Michigan Monday. 'It comes down to I didn't ask for it, you know. I said no, and where does it come to the point to where we teach men not to do this to women?'
