HAMPTON -- A kayaker had to be rescued after falling into the water near the HRBT in Hampton Monday night.

Emergency personnel received the call of the man in the waters off the Fort Monroe area just before 11 p.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Pereira with the Hampton Fire-Rescue Division.

Fire officials say his fellow kayaker attempted to pull him from the water, but when he couldn't, he made it to land to call for help.

The kayaker, in his 40s, was rescued by a Hampton fire boat a short time later, Pereira said. He was taken to the hospital for observation.

Hampton fire officials are now searching for the lost kayak so it doesn't become an obstacle in the water for other boats.

It is unclear what caused the man to fall into the water.
