8/22 UPDATE: The Salvation Army is putting out the call for book bags. Based on last year's distribution numbers, we need at least another 250 book bags by Tuesday, August 26, said Kelly R. Straub. Pencils are also needed.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Children are still enjoying time away from school, but it won't be long until they are back in the classroom.

For over twenty years, ABC13 and the Salvation Army have teamed up to make sure needy students have the 'Write Stuff' for the first day of school.

School supplies like book bags, notebooks, pencils and more are being accepted all month in specifically-marked boxes and barrels located at all local Walmart and Chick-fil-A stores.

At Chick-fil-A from August 11-16, each person who makes a donation will receive a coupon for a free breakfast item. Donations always skyrocket with this offer, organizers say.

'We believe we owe to our community to help ensure every child enters their classroom set up with the tools they need to succeed,' said ABC13 General Manager Brad Ramsey. 'These are the same kids who will be the leaders of our community in the very near future, and I think that makes this a great cause.'

This is a good weekend for the kickoff since it's the Virginia tax-free holiday for school supplies. So, while you're shopping for your own family, consider picking up something to help others.

The items will be distributed to select families through the Salvation Army.
