NEWPORT NEWS -- Police are looking for 3 men who terrorized a family by invading their home, armed with baseball bats and machetes.

Detective Allison Erickson said the robbery happened the morning of Saturday, July 27, when a mother, father, and son were asleep in their home on Cheryl Circle in the Nicewood section of the city.

'The mother and father get woken up by intruders in the home,' explained Erickson. 'They approach them, armed with machetes, baseball bats, and beating one of the family members. They also restrained them with zip ties, hand and feet.'

The robbers stole cell phones, money, and jewelry.

'This is the stuff of nightmares, and we wake up to somebody with knives and with masks on in their bedroom. They're watching each other get assaulted and tied up. This is very serious,' Erickson told 13News Now.

The masks may have prevented the family members from seeing the faces of their attackers, but Erickson said they were able to tell at least one intruder may have been Hispanic. He had a distinctive tattoo on his left arm.It appeared to be a tiger or lion with its mouth open. He also had a cross tattooed on the arm.
