NEWPORT NEWS-Two people have been displaced because fire damaged their Newport News home.

Smoke and flames were pouring from the home on Center Avenue when firefighters arrived around 8:40 a.m.

After determining the residents weren't there, they worked to bring the fire under control. That took about 30 minutes, said Battalion Chief Jack Carper.

The husband and wife were at work.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the house has been condemned.

The Red Cross is helping the couple with food, clothing and lodging.
