EASTVILLE-- When severe storms rolled across the Eastern Shore of Virginia Thursday, damaging winds took a toll on Eastville.
At the Cape Charles Town Harbor, winds were clocked at more than 50 miles per hour, while some at the scene reported gusts up to 70.
'We were on our back deck and could see the thick black line of storms coming at us. It hit hard and left about as quickly as it came,' said Eastville resident Ive Chubb.
Thanks to the swift action of volunteers, the Schooner Virginia didn't suffer any damage as it approached the docks during the height of the storm.
Volunteers at the harbor say that wind gusts during the time period when the schooner was attempting to make landfall made docking a harrowing procedure.
'The Schooner Virginia was coming in and it took 10 of us to secure her to the docks,' said harbor volunteer Ralph Orzo.
Calmer conditions prevail for a tall ship weekend in Cape Charles.
