PORTSMOUTH -- It's the last week of toll-free rides through the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels and the MLK Extension in Portsmouth.

Tolling begins February 1.

If you haven't signed up for an E-ZPass, you have more time to do it. Elizabeth River Tunnels is keeping its Customer Service Center open until midnight. The ERT office, located at 700 Port Centre Parkway in Portsmouth, will keep the extended hours until February 2.

Sunday, Christopher Newport University students worked into the night on a study examining the potential impact the tolls will have on people's lives. The student researchers are surveying 600 Southside residents in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.

The study, commissioned by the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization, asks people how they expect the tolls will impact their daily lives when it comes to travel.

''Do people expect that they're going to change their driving patterns? Do they expect that they're going to commute with other people more, car pool more, take the bus?'' CNU Political Science Professor and survey analyst Dr. Quentin Kiddsaid, referring to types of questions the survey asks.

Drivers with E-ZPass will pay $1.00 during peak hours and 75 cents during off-peak hours.
Those without an E-ZPass transponder will pay more: $2.50 during peak times and $2.25 during off-peak.

You can also order an E-ZPass online or by telephone. You will need your driver's license number, your vehicles VIN number and a credit card.

There are several locations throughout Hampton Roads where you can get an E-ZPass, but those offices are not open late. Click here for retailers selling the E-ZPass.
