NEWPORT NEWS - Christmas is the season of giving, to help those less fortunate than yourself, and there are many places to give: the Salvation Army, area foodbanks and other charities.

In Newport News, Councilwoman Sharon P. Scott and the Food Drive Committee are gearing up for the 11th Annual North District Holiday Food Drive Party on Saturday. The theme of this year's effort is Take a Bite Out of Hunger.

To support the Food Drive Party, go to the old AJ Wright at 451 Oriana Road in Newport News and drop off any non-perishable food or cash.

The party starts at 10:00 a.m. and will feature local musicians, children's activities (including finger printing by the Newport News Sheriff's Office) and Ezra Hill, an original Tuskeegee airman.

Food will be distributed at the same location on December 21 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

'Most families who benefited from our efforts over the past years include the working poor, unemployed and persons who are on a fixed income,' Councilwoman Scott said. 'These families are having difficultly making ends meet all year long.'

Last year, about 700 families in need received food.
