NORFOLK - The American Cancer Society hosts a number of fundraisers, including Relay For Life, each year right here in Hampton Roads.

While the events celebrate cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease, we often forget that the events are fundraisers for the organization so it can provide support programs and services for cancer patients, at no cost. The events also raise funds for the American Cancer Society's research program, which has invested $3.8 billion over the past 60 years to find, prevent, treat and cure cancer. Yet, there's more research to be done, including right here in Hampton Roads.

- The Society is recruiting people to get personally involved in its research through the nationwide Cancer Prevention Study or CPS-3. Previous studies have given us a better understanding of the dangers of tobacco use and the emergence of the obesity epidemic over the last half-century. This new study is expected to help researchers better understand the factors that cause or prevent cancer and, ultimately, to help eliminate cancer as a major health concern for future generations.

- Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never personally been diagnosed with cancer are invited to enroll in the study. Cancer survivors are not eligible for the study, but are asked to help spread the word about the study so that we can enroll at least 300,000 people across the US in CPS-3.

- Study participants will be asked to read and sign a consent form, complete a survey, provide a waist measurement, and give a small blood sample (similar to a doctor's visit). At home, participants will receive periodic follow-up surveys and research updates through annual newsletters for the next 20-30 years. It is a personal, long-term commitment with potential benefits impacting our lives, but also the next generations.

- The American Cancer Society is enrolling people in the study this week, through June 18Th at multiple locations across Hampton Roads. We need people to enroll in CPS-3 so we can have finish the fight against cancer. People can register for an enrollment appointment online at American Cancer Society Website or call 888-604-5888. Walk-ins will also be accepted.
