NEWPORT NEWS - A pickup truck hit a utility pole in Newport News, pulling down power lines and forcing police to close part of the roadway.
It happened around 5:00 a.m. at 27th Street and Buxton Ave. and police were telling drivers to avoid the area. Eastbound lanes reopened by 7:45 a.m.
Dominion Power crews were at the scene to make repairs to the pole and get the power on to customers who were in the black early Wednesday.
The pickup truck driver told 13News he has insomnia and fell asleep at the wheel. He said he was headed home and was about 6 blocks away when he nodded off.
As police worked the scene, an officer spotted smoke coming from the Citgo gas station across the street. Firefighters say they found a small fire in a storage closet. The fire was sparked by an electrical short caused the crash, investigators said.
27-year-old Harry Sherman Cummins, Jr., was issued a summons for reckless driving, police spokesman Lou Thurston told WVEC.com.
