11/18 UPDATE: Five men have been charged in the case.

-Keonte David, 20, of Portsmouth is charged with Attempted Robbery (felony), Conspiracy (felony), Assault & Batter another because of such person's race (felony), Assault by Mob (misdemeanor)
-Christopher T. Osborne of Norfolk is charged with Attempted Robbery (felony), Conspiracy (felony), Assault & Batter another because of such person's race (felony), Assault by Mob (misdemeanor)
-Robert Parker, 20 of Portsmouth is charged with Eluding Police (felony), Conspiracy (felony), Accessory to Robbery (felony), Accessory After the Fact (misdemeanor), 2 counts of False Statement to Police (misdemeanor), Driving while Driver's License is Suspended or Revoked (misdemeanor), Reckless Driving (misdemeanor).
-Dache Lamel Livermon, 20, of Chesapeake is charged with False Statement to Police (misdemeanor)
-Devon Brown, 19, of Chesapeake is charged with Accessory after the Fact (misdemeanor).

Osborne, Livermon and Brown are in the Navy, ODU said, and none of the five is affiliated with the university.

ODU told that the victim didn't know the suspects.

On the diverse college campus, students were surprised to hear the motive behind the crime.

ODU Senior Erin Gooch said, ''s kind of a sore subject, I think that's old, you know, our culture is growing, not regressing.'

The Naval Criminal Investigative Services assisted in the investigation.

NORFOLK -- Students at Old Dominion University were emailed a safety alert after an attempted robbery in a school parking lot.

ODUpolice believe the incident happened just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday in Lot 44 located at 49th Street and Powhatan Avenue.

The victim told campus police that he was walking through the parking lot when he noticed three men get out of a car. One of the men allegedly approached the victim and hit him in the face, initiating a fight. The other two males are accused of pinning the victim to the ground while trying to remove a wallet from his pocket.

After a struggle with the victim, the three suspects left in the car without taking anything. He suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment. The university has not identified the victim and are not confirming if he was student at ODU.

The suspects are described as being at least 6 feet tall and in their 20's. The men were all wearing dark colored jeans and t-shirts. The car the suspects were in is described as a black two door Hyundai Elantra.

The university is advising students and staff to take safety precautions such as walking in well-lit areas and to consider using the Safe Ride van service or school escort service by calling (757) 683-3477.
