NORFOLK -- Timothy Robinson was a star athlete from Mobile, Alabama, who made a perfectly clean tackle in a game but never got up. From the stands, his mother watched her son lying motionless on the ground.
'I didn't have a clue as to what was going on. All I could do is stand and cry,' Evelyn Robinson remembers.
Timothy suffered a serious brain injury. Today, he cannot walk or talk and communicates only through text. He requires around-the-clock care.
His family sued the company who made the helmet Tim was wearing that night. The brand and model is not recommended by Virginia Tech researchers.
In our 13News Now Investigation, we found a number of schools in Hampton Roads using the very same low-rated helmet.
Tonight on 13News Now at 6, we'll introduce you to Timothy and his mother. We'll also show you how to use our online 'helmet tracker database' to uncover what helmet your child is wearing and how it stacks up on Virginia Tech's five-star rating system.
