UPDATE DEC. 19: Williamsburg Police continue their search for the suspect but say thanks to the public, they've had numerous leads. Detectives continue to work those leads Thursday.
WILLIAMSBURG- Williamsburg Police are looking for a suspect they say raped a woman who was walking to aFood Lion grocery store near her off-campus apartment.
Police were called Tuesday night for a report of an armed suspect around 8:30 PM to an area behind an apartment complex on New Hope Road. That's where the found the victim.
The College of William&Mary has put out a CAMPUS SAFETY NOTICEconfirming that the victim was one of their students. The school's Vice-President for Student Affairs says 'I know you share my sadness that one of our students was the victim of such a horrible crime. Please keep her in your thoughts and know we are making sure she has access to all our available resources and support services.'
The woman told police she left her apartment on Sterling Manor Drive and was walking east on Middle Street to go to the Food Lion.She says as she was approaching a parking garage, she saw the suspect across the street from her. The woman told police the suspect asked her something, but she could not understand him. Police say she became suspicious and reached for her phone to call a friend. Police say when she grabbed her phone, the suspect approached her and showed her a knife.That's when she was taken down a path between a pond and the apartments on New Hope Rd. The suspect then hit her in the face and sexually assaulted her.The woman was transported toRiverside hospital in Newport News.
Police described the suspect as a black male in his mid-20's with untrimmed facial hair, approximately 6'2, between 200 and 230 pounds.He was wearing dark colored jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt, along with a dark colored winter cap.
