SUFFOLK- The City of Suffolk will recognize people who've said yes to helping young people.

January marks the 12th Anniversary of National Mentoring Month, an annual campaign to recruit volunteer mentors.

In Suffolk, the757 Protege-Suffolk Mentoring program was developed by the Office on Youth in an effort to help close the mentoring gap in our city. This year's theme is 'Mentoring Works' and will focus on how quality mentoring relationships can help young people succeed at home, in school and at work.

It doesn't take special skills to be a mentor, just the willingness to listen, offer encouragement, and share what you have learned about life through your own experiences, officials say.

Mentors and youth that have mentors are invited to join millions nationwide on Thursday, January 9, 2014, for 'I AM MENTOR' Social Media Day by using social media to inspire others to learn more about mentoring and how they can make a difference in the life of a child.

On Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 6 p.m., the Suffolk Office on Youth will honor local mentors at the Planter's Club for National 'Thank Your Mentor Day.'

If you would like to recognize an adult that mentors a youth or an organization that sponsors a mentoring program, please contact Byron Lawrence, Program Coordinator, 757-514-4506 or 757-514-7250.
