NEWPORT NEWS -- More than three dozen employees at the Newport News-based Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) were laid off Wednesday.

Jefferson Lab officials told 13News Now the action was taken as part of a broad workforce restructuring effort to ensure the nuclear physics lab meets future mission requirements.

The 46 people whose employment was terminated, Wednesday, represented about 5% of the lab's 800-member workforce.

The lab remains on track to begin a new era of nuclear physics experiments beginning in 2016, officials said.
