NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News mother was charged after police say they found her passed out behind the wheel of her car with her seven-year-old son in the front seat.
According to police spokesman Lou Thurston, an officer saw a car parked half way on the curb facing southbound in the northbound traffic lane of Oriana Road around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The officer said the driver appeared to be passed out behind the wheel with the engine running and the boy in the front seat.
Following a number of field sobriety tests, 36-year-old Lovely Leshia Jackson was arrested and charged with one count each of driving under the influence of alcohol- second offense, reckless driving and felony child neglect.
Child Protective Services was notified and the child was placed in the care of the suspect's boyfriend, Thurston said.
