CHESAPEAKE -- Police are investigating a home invasion that left a 92-year-old Chesapeake woman injured.
Florence Mann was assaulted while she was sleeping Sunday around midnight by an unknown suspect who had forced entry into the back of her home.
Mann says the man broke in and began rummaging through all the cabinets and drawers in her kitchen, living room and an extra bedroom.
She didn't hear the commotion, she says, until she heard the intruder throw a heavy, silver teapot in the living room.
The intruder next threw a scale laying in the kitchen.
'They took that in there and just opened my door and threw it, and I was in bed, and they didn't know it,' Mann recounted. 'But when it hit I yelled 'what the heck is going on?' and they scrammed and got out of here.'
Mann was hit in the chin and has a big bruise as a reminder of what happened.
The incident has frightened neighbors, who say crime rarely happens on their street.
'Oh my god! I cannot believe that. That's frightening,' Judy Anderson said as she walked her dog past Mann's house on Watermill Grove. 'We've had a couple break-ins before down on Lakewood Lane but not [someone] being assaulted.'
Mann said the intruder ran off before she could see any details about the person. She's recounting her ordeal in hopes of warning other elderly women who live alone in her neighborhood.
Nothing was taken from the home, according to police spokeswoman Kelly O'Sullivan.
