NORFOLK A young boy is lucky to be alive after nearly drowning in Ocean View on Memorial Day.

Witnesses say the nine-year-old was playing on a sandbar and then stepped off into deeper water and began to struggle.

People on the beach in the 1200 block of W. Ocean View Avenue went into the water and pulled the boy to shore, but he was not breathing and had no pulse, according to bystanders.

Robbie Robinson, retired from the Navy and trained in CPR, ran down the beach from his house and helped the boy's family resuscitate him.

'You gotta compress and I'll breath. You press and I'll breath,' Robinson said he told them. 'Once we got a rhythm going, did that for about four minutes and it worked. All of it came up and his eyes eventually came back and it was good.'

The boy is recovering at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
