CHESAPEAKE- The city named a new city manager Tuesday night.

James E. Baker, currently the manager of York County, South Carolina, will be replacing William Harrell, who resigned the position earlier this year to head Hampton Roads Transit.

Baker will begin work on January 14th, 2013. He accepted a 2 year contract with a salary of $205,000 a year.

Baker was one of five finalists who met with City Council during three days of interviews beginning last Friday. Baker was the unanimous choice.

According to a city news release, York County, South Carolina has a population of 226,073 which is comparable in size to Chesapeake and is one of the fastest growing counties in South Carolina.

In April, the Mayor asked Vice-Mayor John de Triquet and Councilwoman Ella Ward to serve as co-chairs of a committee to lead the search for Chesapeake's next city manager.

The process got underway in July with the selection of the Mercer Group, an executive management search firm. Of the ten semi-finalists, one was a woman and three were African-Americans.

Baker is 58 years old and is married and the father of two sons.
