SMITHFIELD -- A Newport News man is behind bars after he allegedly stabbed his coworker during a workplace dispute early Thursday morning.

Emergency personnel responded to the call at the Smithfield Packing plant around 1:45 a.m., according to Smithfield police spokesperson Matthew Rogers.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a 45-year-old man suffering from several stab wounds to his back. The victim was taken to Riverside Hospital to be treated for his injuries, but has since been released.

Investigators say the suspect, Yunior Ramon Torres-Ortiz, 21, used a pair of scissors to stab the victim before leaving the scene.

He was later apprehended in Newport News after receiving treatment for injuries to his left hand, Rogers said.

Ortiz has been booked into Western Tidewater Regional Jail and charged with aggravated malicious wounding.

The circumstances leading up to the altercation remain unclear. An investigation is now underway.
