NORFOLK -- The Norfolk-based Navy ship that went to the rescue of a ship taken over by pirates last year has anew commanding officer.
Cmdr. Frank Castellano turned overcommand of USS Bainbridge on Friday.
Taking charge isbe Cmdr. Daniel Sunvold, who was the ship's executive officer at the time of the Maersk-Alabama hijacking a year ago.
Bainbridge was conducting counter-terrorism operations in the Somali Basin and rushed to the scene. Bainbridge coordinated hostage negotiation efforts, control of naval assets and ultimately embarked Special Operations Forces to end the operation.
One pirate was captured; three were killed and the crew rescued Captain Richard Phillips.
Capt. Phillips was on hand for Friday's ceremony.
It was the first piracy event against a U.S. flagged vessel.
