NEWPORT NEWS -- Police have arrested a man they say cashed hundreds of lottery tickets that had been stolen from a convenience store.

Ashley Hill was positively identified by a Newport News police officer from video footage that was released of the September 27th incident.

On Thursday morning around 8 a.m., Hill was observed entering a 7-11 Store at Wood Creek and Jefferson Avenue When officer approached Hill, he fled the scene.He was taken into custody in the 400 block of Denbigh Boulevard a short time later without incident.

Hill, 23, of the 11000 block of Winston Place, Newport News, has been charged with two counts of Obtaining Money by False Pretense and one count of Grand Larceny.

Police say Hill cashed in hundreds of lottery tickets that had been stolen from a Newport News convenience store.

Surveillance camera images show that Hill at a store in the 400 block of Denbigh Blvd. on the morning of Sept. 27th.

'About 1200 tickets were stolen around 3:45 a.m. and he cashed over 600,' police spokesman Harold Eley told WVEC.com.

The tickets were taken from one store but cashed in for several thousand dollars later that morning.
