DARE COUNTY/ELIZABETH CITY-- About 39,000 North Carolina customers of Dominion Power were without power Friday night. The widespread outage happened about 6 p.m.

According to Dominion Power spokesperson Bonita Harris, about 37,500 customers on the Outer Banks and 2,270 customers in Elizabeth City were affected.

Harris said the power company was still investigating but initial indications pointed to a failed transmission line. Crews were working to get another line up and working.

Harris said that power was back on by 7:30 p.m.
