GATES COUNTY-- The man suspected of attacking a couple with a hatchet turned himself in to authorities Monday night.

Justin Cross, 24, of Willerton Road in Gates County has been charged with 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or to inflict serious injury, 1 count of kidnapping and one count of armed robbery.

He has been taken to a correctional facility in Winton, NC where he is being held on $500,000 bond.

Deputies say Cross knocked on a couple's door in the 400 block of Hobbsville Road Saturday morning and asked to use the phone. The resident let him inside.

Soon after, the stranger allegedly asked the homeowner for money. The resident refused to hand over any cash, and a fight ensued.

Deputies say that's when Cross pulled out a hatchet and hit the homeowner in the back of the head. The resident's girlfriend tried to help, and Cross allegedly hit her with the hatchet too.

Cross then ran off.

The 41-year-old victim called his mother who said when she arrived at the scene she saw blood everywhere. 'It looked like my son was bleeding to death,' she said. 'It's horrible. He's like a butcher.'

The victim's mother says her son's foot was cut and his girlfriend's face was cut.

Medics took the residents to Albermarle Hospital where doctors treated and released them.
