NEWPORT NEWS-- Police say a Florida man confessed to the fatal beating of a minister from Newport News earlier this week. The man said he wasstealing money to buy crack cocaine, according to police.
John Henry Bowser, 76, was killed in Jacksonville, Florida on Tuesday.
Police say 24-year-old Terrance Wright of Florida was recently released from jail and has been charged with the pastor's murder.
According to investigators in Jacksonville, Wright drove Bowser's vehicle to a police station, parked it in the assistant chief's parking spot, and told the officers inside that he had killed someone by beating them in the head with a hammer.
Police ran the tag of the vehicle and then went to the home on North Market Street and found Bowser dead in the kitchen with severe head trauma.
Bowser founded the Glorious Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith in Newport News in 1959.
Bowser made his home in Florida where he also served as a bishop at a church.
