ELIZABETH CITY -- 'Elizabeth City State University is no different than any other community at all. There are issues that we've had, and we are diligently working on those issues to bring closure and strength to the university,' Dr. Willie Gilchrist assured people Monday.

ECSU's Chancellor made the pledge after the university, working with Elizabeth City Police Department, found that campus police didn't investigate 125 reported crimes properly. Those crimes, which date back to 2007, include 18 reported sexual assaults.

Elizabeth City Police Department's Captain John Young told 13News since his officers got involved, they've been able to solve 40 of the 125 cases. About two weeks ago, the city police began sending off-duty patrol officers to help with campus security around the clock.

Campus Police Chief Sam Beamon resigned Friday in the wake of a sexual assault case at Butler Hall last month. He had been chief for 10 years.
