NEWPORT NEWS - A teenager has died and another is fighting for his life after they were shot on Chestnut Ave. late Monday night.

Police responding to a shots fired call around 11 p.m. found the first victim, a 17-year old boy, outside the Quick Save Food Mart. Police spokesman Harold Eley says he'd been shot multiple times.

The second victim, 13-year-old Lutrell Kittles, was found two blocks away at 25th Street and Oak Ave. Eley says he was shot once.

Both were taken to the hospital; Kittle passed away at 11:43 p.m.

There were more than two dozen yellow evidence markers at the scene, indicating many shots were fired.

Kittles lived on 22nd street, not far from where the shooting happened.

Officers believe both teens were shot as they stood outside the convenience store and that the shootings are connected.

Terry Riddick of Best Kept Secret, Stop the Violence says his group wants to help police. He had just come from the Hampton vigil for 16-year-old Raphael Davis Jr., who was shot Saturday night near the Hampton Coliseum Spring Carnival, when some of his members called to let him know about the shootings in Newport News.

'It really hurts, Riddick said. 'We don't know the victims as of yet, but we're gonna get to the bottom of it.'

Investigators do not know what led up to the shootings and no suspect information is available.
