PORTSMOUTH-The ribbon will be cut Friday on the new student center at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth.

The 57,500-square-foot student center has dining options, study areas, a fitness center, gaming rooms, a full court gymnasium and more. Also in the new building is the TCC Child Development Center, which offers full- and part-time day care at rates based on family income.

Officials hope the new center will enhance student engagement and improve academic performance.

Among those attending today's ribbon cutting will be Portsmouth Mayor Kenneth Wright, TCC President Edna Baehre-Kolovani and Portsmouth Provost Michelle Woodhouse.

The Portsmouth Student Center is one of four at TCC. The Norfolk Student Center opened in May 2011. The Virginia Beach Student Center opened on Jan. 13 with an official ribbon-cutting planned for March. The Chesapeake Student Center is scheduled to open later this spring.
