HAMPTON -- An alert Hampton Police officer foiled an attempted boat theft early Friday morning.

According to police, Officer Foote observed a speeding pickup truck in the parking lot of the Bass Pro Shop just after midnight.

The truck turned on Pine Chapel Road and ran a stop sign. About 50 feet up the I-64 bridge, the boat disconnected from the hitch and fell back down the hill, police said.

The driver, Larry Spruill, and his passenger, Amanda Murphy, tried to fix the hitch but were unsuccessful in their attempt.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with grand larceny of the boat.
