MANTEO, N.C. -- A new turtle rehablitation center will soon open in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island's Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation STAR Center opens Friday, June 27 at noon.

The new 3,000 square foot sea turtle center has already seen its first patient.

The critically endangered juvenile Kemp's Ridley sea turtle was brought in to the new STAR Center by N.E.S.T volunteers. It had been hooked just below the right eye. Aquarium staff carefully removed the hook. The eye was not damaged so the turtle was released later in the day near Nags Head.
