NEWPORT NEWS -- Fire and smoke damaged two businesses in a strip shopping center in Newport News.

Crews were called to 606 Denbigh Blvd. after a passerby reported smoke coming from the Counseling Center, LLC around 4:40 a.m., Battalion Chief Stephen Pincus told WVEC.com.

Fire damaged that business and smoke got into the store next door, so crews had to clear out both locations.

The Fire Marshal's Office is trying to determine what sparked the fire. Pincus says the preliminary damage is estimated to be $35,000.00.
