WILLIAMSBURG -- The City of Williamsburg's Green Team is sponsoring a friendly challenge to recognize the efforts of City Businesses in making Williamsburg a greener community.

Earlier this month, the City received a Platinum Award in the 2010 Virginia Municipal League (VML) Green Government Challenge. The City's Green Team, made up of employees from all departments, decided to continue the momentum by creating their own challenge.

'As proud as we are of our recognition as a Green Government, we're just one part of the Williamsburg community. We know there are businesses in the City who are also committed to environmental sustainability,' said Jodi Miller, Assistant City Manager and Chair of the City's Green Team. 'We want to acknowledge t hem and their employees who work every day to reduce their carbon footprints and hope to inspire other businesses to do the same.'

To be eligible for the Challenge, a business must be physically located within the City of Williamsburg and operate under an active Business License. ;

The application consists of a simple form a variety of green actions. To qualify, businesses need to check off at least 12 activities they're currently doing in any or all of the following areas:
-Waste Reduction
-Water Conservation
-Energy Conservation
-Transportation
-Recycling
-General/Staff Education

The form is available online and can be completed online or downloaded and faxed to the City. The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 5. ;

Businesses which Meet the criteria of the Green Business Challenge will be recognized at the Williamsburg City Council Meeting on Friday, November 12, 2010. They will also receive recognition on the City's website and a window cling to display.
