NEWPORT NEWS -- Police are working to find the people who shot and robbed a 31-year-old as he walked on Woods Road off J. Clyde Morris Boulevard early Sunday morning.
'I heard him screaming for help. He said he'd been shot,' someone in the area told 13NewsNow. 'Nobody would go over there to help him, so I was like, everybody told me to leave it alone, leave it alone, but I was like, 'No, I'm not going to sit there and let him bleed to death,' so I went over there, and the cops got there in maybe five to ten minutes.'
The victim told officers he was on Woods Road near Sundown Lane when a white, 4-door Nissan (possibly an Altima) stopped. 2 people with guns got out of the car and demanded his cell phone. The victim threw something on the ground, then tried to run. The 2 men started shooting at him and hit him in the leg. They got in the car and left.
Paramedics took the victim to the hospital. Police expect him to be all right.
'He's a very nice guy, and it's just very upsetting to know that this happened to him,' said a friend of the victim.
People living in the area say shootings are common, especially at night.
'We live in a brick building, so if we hear anything [gunshots] we duck,' said Connie Blackburn, who lives in an apartment nearby the shooting. 'We're safe by the brick as long as we're below the threshold.'
Suspect #1 is described as a black male, about 6'1', 175 pounds, in his mid to late twenties, with a medium build. He was wearing a white hat and white shirt and was armed with a handgun.
Suspect #2 is described as a black male, average height and build, wearing a black jacket and lighter colored blue jeans and armed with a handgun.
