VIRGINIA BEACH -- The first MinuteClinic opened Wednesday inside CVS pharmacy stores in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.

Walk-in clinics located in retails stores are touted as a solution to address the wave of newly insured patients expected with the Affordable Care Act.

The MinuteClinic accepts Medicaid, but each plan has to be approved, officials said.

MinuteClinic nurse practitioners specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections.

Minor wounds, abrasions, skin conditions and joint sprains are treated, and common vaccinations such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A & B are available at most locations. Walk-in camp, sports and college physicals are available daily.

In addition, MinuteClinic administers a series of wellness services designed to help patients identify lifestyle changes needed to improve their current and future health, including screenings and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The clinics are open 7 days a week. No appointment is necessary and most insurance is accepted.

The Virginia Beach clinic is located at 1688 Laskin Road. The clinic in Chesapeake is at 1329 Kempsville Road.

Four additional clinics are expected to open in May and June and will serve patients in Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg and Portsmouth.
