PORTSMOUTH -- If you live in Portsmouth, you may want to start thinking about weekend travel alternatives. That's because two water crossings into and out of the city are expected to be shut down for scheduled maintenance and repair work.

I-264 West Downtown Tunnel will be closed Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. the following morning, according to an ERT press release. Beginning Sunday, weeknight westbound closures will resume through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m.

VDOT is also expected to close the I-64 High Rise Bridge to traffic during the overnight hours on Saturday andSunday.

The bridge will be closed on Saturday from midnight until 6 a.m. and on Sunday from midnight until 7 a.m., according to a VDOT press release.

Maritime traffic will also be impacted.

Virginia Beach resident Roger Young says he travels to downtown Portsmouth two to three times a week.

He considers the weekend closures a necessary inconvenience.

'It's going to be an inconvenience of course, but as long as they take care of business right away - a one time deal - that will be fine because maintenance has to be done,' Young said.

Others worry the closures will have a negative impact on local businesses.

'We have a lot of entertainment on the weekend and people come from Norfolk and Virginia Beach and it's hard to get around sometimes because the midtown is always backed up,' said Troy Manley of Roger Browns Sports Bar and Restaurant. 'So sometimes they turnaround to go back and we lose a little bit of business.'

If you plan on traveling while the closures are in effect, you can usethese alternate routes:

  • Midtown Tunnel
  • Tolled Jordan Bridge
  • Gilmerton Bridge
