GLOUCESTER -- Fire destroyed a home in Gloucester early Wednesday.

A neighbor reported the fire on Short Lane just before 8 a.m., Hanna Carson with Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue told WVEC.com, and flames had engulfed the home by the time crews arrived.

No one was hurt, but a dog died in the fire, she added.

'The fire is knocked down at this point and crews are conducting overhaul operations right now,' she said, adding that a shed on the property was damaged by the heat of the fire.

Investigation continues into cause of the fire.

The Abingdon Volunteer Fire/Rescue department assisted in the firefight.
