WILLIAMSBURG -- An apartment building in Williamsburg was destroyed after a fire broke out on July 4.

Firefighter responded to the 100 block of Merrimac Trail just before 12 p.m. Friday, according to Eric Stone with the Williamsburg Fire Department.Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from a third floor apartment when crews arrived on scene.

Initially six people were displaced, but fire officials later determined all 12 apartments in the building needed to be condemned.

A total of 17 people were displaced as a result, Stone said.

The Williamsburg Human Services and the Red Cross are assisting the displaced residents.
