NORFOLK --- Some used to call it the 'Times Square of the South,' but Norfolk's Wards Corner is now known for vacant store fronts and slow business.

But the city is in early negotiations to breathe new life into the area, starting with a Harris Teeter grocery store.

The plans are still in the beginning stages, but it's something residents could see in the next six months.

People living close by say it's something they've waited years for.

'You see it declining and you keep hoping something will change, and it will start getting like it used to be,' said Tom Russell.

If built, the Harris Teeter will be placed at the intersection of Granby Street and Little Creek Road where AJ Gators and the Dollar Tree are now located.
